Not far from St. Lorenzo Church in Florence
is the Mercato Centrale, a traditional old market where families have
had stalls for generations. The Florentines have the gift (and the
marketing savvy for arranging their food with a remarkably sophisticated
eye for color, texture, and shape. The seafood in this painting,
inspired by a display in Florence, is placed with an almost sacramental reverence on pure white paper in
what seems to be an act of gratitude and thanksgiving. Thus, the artist
can find beauty even where prosaic handwritten signs advertise the price
per kilo in Italian Lira.
