Martinez has always had a fascination with painting flowers. His technical skill combined with paintings more like flower portraiture than still life. Adding to the beauty of each individual bloom or leaf is the relationship of each flower to its unique backdrop – a crumbling wall, a rusty iron ring or even a beautifully furnished interior wall. The viewer is encouraged to appreciate the delicate beauty and fragility of these flowers, but behind the sense of transience is a matching reassurance that there is strength and permanence in all beauty.
