This painting started out as a whimsy and it was a pure
joy to paint. I considered it part of a “
Peaceable
Kingdom
” series based on the work of the Quaker artist Edward Hicks, inspired
by Isaiah 11:6 – “The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the
leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and
the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.” I named the
painting “White Christmas” thinking more of the season of the year
than anything else. Then I
read an article
in Chester County Life magazine by Tony Rotondo in which he made the
observation that the painting “captures the serenity of that first
Christmas so long ago.” My
immediate thought was, “so that’s what they are looking at!” This
is an example of why it is so important for artists to show their work.
Intelligent and sensitive viewers are often very useful in helping
artists develop their ideas in ways that would not be possible in the
solitude of the studio.
